Things You Should Never Do After Replacing Your Car Windshield

Replacing your car windshield is a delicate process, and the adhesive needs time to bond properly. To ensure the longevity and safety of your new windshield, avoid the following mistakes:

1. Don’t Drive Immediately

The adhesive used to secure the windshield needs time to cure. Follow the installer’s recommendation, but as a general rule, wait at least one hour-or longer depending on the adhesive type-before driving.

2. Don’t Remove Protective Covers or Tape

Technicians often apply protective tape or film to keep the windshield in place during the curing period. Removing it too early can compromise the seal. Only take it off when advised by your installer.

3. Don’t Wash or Clean the Windshield

Avoid cleaning your windshield for at least 24 hours after replacement. High-pressure car washes, harsh chemicals, or vigorous wiping can weaken the adhesive bond.

4. Don’t Slam the Car Doors

Slamming doors creates sudden air pressure inside the cabin, which can shift or damage the freshly installed windshield. Close all doors gently during the first few days.

5. Don’t Drive Aggressively on Bumpy Roads

Driving over speed bumps or rough roads at high speeds can stress the glass and adhesive. Take it slow during the curing period to protect the new windshield.

6. Don’t Expose It to Extreme Temperature Changes

Rapid temperature changes-like parking in direct sunlight after being in an air-conditioned garage, or exposing the glass to freezing temperatures-can compromise the seal and cause cracks. Keep the car in moderate conditions when possible.

7. Don’t Remove Side Tape or Seals

Some installations include additional side tape or weather seals for extra support. Do not remove them until your technician confirms it’s safe to do so.
